The stones of Pitti - Le pietre di Pitti
The facade of Palazzo Pitti was built, both in the first structure and in the further extension, inserting larger stones on the base and smaller and refined ones on the top floors. In the rougher part, the bottom one, there is a spot in the facade formed by two roughed stones with opposite characteristics, which one of them is longer than the other one.
The legend tells us that the stones, were placed next to each other probably on the instruction of Luca Pitti, patron of the Palace, who put them close, to be able to identify himself symbolically in the larger stone and indicating his enemies in the short one.
The two stones are placed on the left of the main central entrance by looking at the facade. They are on the rustic ashlar about two metres above the ground.

La facciata di Palazzo Pitti, fu costruita, sia nel primo impianto
che nel suo successivo ampliamento, inserendo pietre più grandi alla
base e più piccole e raffinate ai piani superiori.
Nella parte più grossolana, quella in basso, esiste un punto
nella facciata che è dato da due pietre sbozzate con opposte
caratteristiche, una lunghissima e una cortissima.
La leggenda ci racconta che furono poste l'una accanto all’altra
probabilmente su indicazione di Luca Pitti, committente del Palazzo, che
le fece accostare, per potersi identificare
simbolicamente nella pietra più grande e indicare i suoi avversari in
quella più piccola.
Le due pietre sono poste sulla sinistra del portone centrale
guardando la facciata. Si trovano sul bugnato rustico a circa due metri da
terra.
